As we welcome the new school year, let’s celebrate the incredible summer we had at After School Matters! Over 10,000 Chicago teens participated in more than 600 diverse programs across the city, from dancing and urban gardening to healthcare management and boxing.
These programs provided safe spaces for young people to develop new skills, earn money, and create lasting friendships. Our teens gained confidence, expressed themselves creatively, and felt empowered to share their thoughts without fear of judgment.
“Having a place like ݮƵ makes you feel like you’re part of a community. I loved my program and learned so much! It was fun and informative.” shared Christian K, ݮƵ teen.
Here are some highlights from the summer:
Rush MedSTEM Explorers Program (Near West Side)
Aspiring healthcare teens tackled healthcare challenges, devising strategic plans to combat issues like cervical cancer in West Garfield and asthma in South Shore.
Digital Visionaries Graphic Design Program (Downtown)
Teens created a scrim that displayed the NASCAR Chicago race, blending creativity with real-world design experience.
True Value Program (Little Village)
Young folkloric dancers mastered traditional Mexican dances, showcasing their talents to family and friends.
Horticulture and Botany Program (Downtown)
Teens grew and harvested pumpkin flowers, onions, cilantro, and jalapeños, using their ingredients to cook delicious dishes like quesadillas.
Ringleaders Boxing Program (South Lawndale)
Participants honed their boxing skills, learned self-defense techniques, and improved their fitness.
The Business of Music at Chicago West Community Music Center (Garfield Park)
Young singers and musicians from all over the city came together, learning and performing songs from different cultures and genres.
We’re proud of the amazing achievements of our teens this summer and look forward to seeing more of their creativity and passion shine during our fall session which kicks off on September 23!
